Australians have proved their sincerity yet again with Agriculture Sector Linkages Program (ASLP) that started in 2005, by expressing interest in export of mangoes from Pakistan to their country. The objective of this program is to help Pakistan in agricultural growth through co-ordination of the two countries in related research and better management of agricultural exports. The agricultural domain is focused on three categories of export, namely mango, citrus and dairy.
Pakistan is an agriculturally rich country and high quality mangoes are one of its distinct export items, since they comprise the most important tree crop of Pakistan. A couple of months ago, Head of the Australian Mango Industry Association, Gavin Scurr said that they were surprised by the export of 4.5 tonnes of mangoes from Pakistan in September because it is considered as relatively off season time of the year.
The Australian High Commissioner in Pakistan, Peter Heyward is nowadays enthusiastically working towards enhancing friendly relations between Australia and Pakistan. He has been emphasizing on increased trade volume between the two countries in different talks held during the past few days.
“Pakistan and Australia are agricultural countries and agricultural reforms in Australia are going on. Both countries can benefit from mutual experience of each other," He said during a meeting held at Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (HCCI).
According to him, Australia has a favorable market for mangoes, and Pakistani mangoes are very popular there. He said that Pakistan can seek the assistance of Australia to achieve better quality of export conditions.
Though the statistics show a surprisingly high figure of production, even then, according to the report on ASLC in 2008, a very small proportion can make it to the international market due to poor maintenance strategy and lack of proper handling. Hopefully this initiative will help Pakistan achieving stable export of mangoes through the upcoming years.
